The digital transformation of healthcare will be a key enabler to successfully maintain accessible and quality health systems across Europe. The future of such systems hinges on the outstanding efforts to provide affordable access to finite healthcare resources while ensuring medical quality for all. Digitisation can support these efforts and the transition to new care models, centered on predictive, preventive, and personalised medical care. The obstacles to the digital transformation are often non-technological and relate primarily to the mindset of practitioners and patients, organisational structures, and governance. The use of large data has undoubtedly an ethical dimension and we must ensure that it is not misused. Governments, businesses, and wellness providers in Europe therefore need to work together to unlock the much-needed digital transformation of the continent’s healthcare. The Summit will debate the forms of cooperation required to speed up digital healthcare transformation.
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

How do you train people? /”#Europe is already doing great things but going forward we need to reduce policy fragmentation and develop a clearer vision on where the EU should go with clear health policy goals and rules.”
Johannes Schildt: “#Europe has a chance to be at the forefront in this master transition in digital healthcare. This is a great opportunity to equalize access to healthcare among member-states and a shift to a more #proactive #healthcare system.”/”We need to have digital healthcare champions in this space. Policy, tech, and the industry need to work together to make sure that this happens.”-@jschildt @KRYcare
Bernd Montag: “When it comes to the professional use of #digitalhealth we are in a good space. We are strong in this area already.”/”When it comes to the 2 key issues topics for mankind and for Europe: #climatechange and #healthcare. #Europe can lead everyone in a safe and accessible way.” – @bernd_Montag CEO of @SiemensHealth

Sustainable healthcare depends on the financial viability of health systems. For decades healthcare costs in Europe have consistently outgrown economic growth. It begs the question of whether the challenges of sustainability and expansion can be dealt with by traditional responses and practices. Innovative medicine is an undeniable driver for high-quality healthcare. It has the potential to reshape these systems, but existing models of governance including payment systems tend to slow their adoption. The simultaneous evolution of personalized medicine challenges traditional healthcare models. The Summit will discuss the financial sustainability of healthcare systems against the backdrop of the changing healthcare landscape driven by innovative, personalised medicine.
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS
Reda Guiha: How key is #innovation in #healthcare? “Innovative medicines are an enabler for #EU healthcare sustainability. Two key areas: 1.#Collaboration between private and public actors; and 2. Outcomes and health benefits for patients”/”Collaboration and partnerships among actors in the healthcare sector are crucial. They have enabled an acceleration of the development of vaccines.”/”Pfizer’s purpose is to work on groundbreaking innovations that will change lives. Sam Proesmans: “#real world data is key to reflecting real life when it comes to clinical trials in data.”/ “The EU has largely underfunded prevention. That is how the pandemic got out of hand.” – @sam_proesmans, advisor for the prime minister of Belgium.
Giulia Del Brenna: “The #COVID19 crisis showed very clearly what we do well, what we can improve, what should be more centralised & what belongs to the competence of the #EU Member States.”/ In response to why the EU’s process is slower than the US… “We have to maintain our standards of efficacy when it comes to new #pharmaceuticals without compromising on safety. Trust is #key – we need to keep the trust of citizens.”

Mental health is often overlooked. Yet, it can ruin lives and damage families, communities, and societies. One in four people worldwide are affected by a mental or neurological disorder at some point in their lives. Every forty seconds someone around the world commits suicide. The policy and financial resources dedicated to mental health do not match the need nor the investment in other disease areas. Mental health is a key component of individual wellbeing, as well as social and economic emancipation. Moreover, it is expected that the COVID-19 pandemic will leave significant traces in mental health for both health care professionals and society as a whole. It is also a central puzzle piece in the wider shift away from a system of sick care to one of health, which supports physical and mental well-being and early intervention to preventive healthcare. Today, science and technology offer new venues for innovation in mental health prevention, treatment, and care. It offers the possibility to profoundly revisit the way we think about mental illnesses and fundamentally change their trajectories. The Summit will include a high-level session to debate the prospects of advancing a European agenda for mental health.
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS

The health data ecosystem is rapidly being overturned by new sources of data, capabilities, and stakeholders. It allows for new capabilities for the generation, storage, and exploitation of data across many aspects of human health, and introduces entirely new configurations and skills. The opportunities for clinical research, health care practice and to boost citizens’ quality of life are paramount. It is also a prerequisite for the digital health transformation. However, public concerns about the involvement of private companies persist, as well as the security, reliability, and privacy of data. Overcoming the “trust deficit” will be an existential requirement to integrate the new environment in health systems. The Summit will debate innovative policy approaches that need to be developed in order to tackle this trust deficit and unlock the digital transformation of Europe’s healthcare.
SESSION HIGHLIGHTS
Didier Reynders: #COVID19 #Vaccine “Trust is the key-word. We must build trust between the consumers and the producers, between the citizens and the authorities.”/ “All major platforms such as Facebook want to collaborate against misinformation by removing fake news & organising an open debate.”
Casper Klynge: “When it comes to #data especially #healthdata from the industry perspective – size matters. Industry leaders need access to #bigdata sets, and more public-private partnerships will help to ensure the responsible and #ethicsal use of this data.”
/ “Agreeing with @dreynders, a fundamental aspect when sharing data: it must be based on trust and safety. It is crucial to ensure the security around patience privacy.” – @KlyngeC @MicrosoftEU
3 areas that are important to help move forward with digital data space according to Casper Klynge @MicrosoftEU:
1. More international collaboration
2. Trust and safety
3. Need to fight the digital divide
Francesco Buonarroti: “European #health #data space is more important than ever before. We need to be more reactive in developing diagnostics and #vaccines.”/ “Strenght of European science in the field of vaccine: @pfizer #vaccine was born in Germany! We must ensure that the discoveries made in our universities are further developed in our countries.” – @MichelGoldman @I3h_Institute

This is an opportunity to develop a European health union and to ensure we are better prepared for the next one.”/ “Crisis expose the fault lines in society. Social protection and safety nets differ complety from one region of the world to another. The positive aspect of this crisis is the solidarity that it has generated across Europe.” – Peter Piot @LSHTM
Philippe Aghion: “US states that unlocked too early have worse economic outcomes. It’s important to overcome the virus to grow in the long term. The “Stop & go” strategy against #COVID19 doesn’t allow to make long term plans and to ensure a strong economic growth.”/
Next steps globally “Public-private partnerships are crucial. Great initiative: launch of HERA @vonderleyen. Challenge: making these partnerships fit for purpose, move away from bureaucracy & ensure fair access to innovative medicines & technologies.”/”Good lesson of the pandemic in Europe: Boost for innovation & proactiveness!”
Luc Debruyne: “Unprecedented #scientific #progress has been made over the course of the last year. That is not to discount the decade of research done before. We can only get out of this crisis with a global effort and #collaboration”
